so, hey, how ya doing lately?
Jun. 6th, 2006 03:53 pmI produce user interfaces for web applications. They will not save the world. I usually enjoy my job, take pride in accomplishments and despite stress and frustration, I'm quite thankful for it. It doesn't fulfill me on some deep level, it's pretty much a way to pay the bills. I have designs on medium-term plans for my career path which are no closer to being in any way related to the 'why' I think I'm here -- the Creator did not place me here to develop user-centric software, as far as I know. So from some angles, I'm a cog in a machine.
I do have the luxury of central heating and air, clean (even bottled!) water on demand, savings, world travel, leisure time and donating to causes I hope will save the world. I can help friends, show appreciation to my family, enjoy my own life and have time to reflect on myself, the world, the universe. I have authority to navel gaze instead of worrying over debt, a home or even food and water. I'm free, and have been all my life.
Someone with whom I was once very close remarked that "We live better than the Caesars of Rome." He was right.
Or is it just me?
