You do realize that one doesn't have any optical zoom, right? I don't know if that's important to you or not, but in that price range, it's kind of surprising. The Canon A series (A 80, zB) and the S series (S 410, zB) do have optical; that may be something worth looking at. The A series uses 4 AA batteries, which makes it a bit bulkier, whereas the S series uses the Canon rechargable battery pack. Optics wise, though, Canon is definitely the one to look at.

(Wow, look at that; atrophy doesn't set in after only four months!)

I knew I could count on you ;) -
I was still thinking of smaller and prettier Canon.
I'll check out more of the S series.

According to the specs, it has digital zoom, which I think will be enough for me - but I'll still look into the others on your recommendation. I gotta decide soon, since I'm hoping to get this by Con.

Yeah, but optical zoom gets crisp lines on closeups of.... well, of whatever you want closeups of; digital loses resolution with each "enhancement".

Another suggestion would be the Olympus D-580 (http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=90132649&loc=111&sp=1). It has 3x Optical and 4x Digital zoom, is a 4.0 megapixel camera, and takes QuickTime movies with sound.

I've been very pleased with the one that [livejournal.com profile] ladyleo and I picked up a couple of weeks ago.

That and it's only $218 with free shipping at buy.com.

I'd strongly recommend a camera with optical zoom. Digital zoom just doesn't work all that well (I completely turned it off on my camera).

Speaking of my camera, I just got this one as a birthday present. So far, I'm quite pleased.

Say cheese (http://www.sonystyle.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/SY_DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=BWAbvKb-GQEbIufRSVMRt-nyuRm7XGbR-Yc=?ProductSKU=DSCW1&Dept=dcc_DIDigitalCameras&CategoryName=dcc_DIDigitalCameras_Cyber-shotDigitalCameras).

Yeah, you and Adrien are right on the optical zoom thing...and Clint put up a good option for a good price...

but...pretty :(

you still have my olympus?

No, I returned that.

Hedonistic consumer binges are good, yes.
FWIW, The bronze looks nifty. I'd get that one.

Woo! Camera geekery...

I have to second this... it makes much more of a difference than you'd think. Optical zoom rules. I don't even look at digital zoom in evaluating a camera... it's a joke.

I have the Canon A80... it's 4 MP, 3x optical zoom, and it has a flip screen. It takes filters and a few lenses, if you decide you want to do funky stuff. Since it's just been replaced by the A95, the price is super low. Plus, it has a range of features that let you operate the camera at any creativity level, from fully automatic to fully manual. I carry mine in my purse all the time, so it's not really a big camera. Everything that's been printed off of it has been beautiful, even at 8x10.

I really wouldn't get the one you're looking at unless you absolutely must have one that fits in a pocket... the extra convenience doesn't make up for the more limited features. Most people also find the smaller cameras harder to keep a steady grip on, resulting in blur from shaky hands.

Oh, and another recommendation... if they have what you want, you might consider buying the camera from Costco (or their web site). Their prices are reasonable, but, more importantly, they have an any reason, any time return policy (which is a lot better than having to wait months for repairs under warranty if anything breaks).

I am quite happy with my ELPH s-400. It's basically the same unit as the one you are considering above, but it has that all-important "optical zoom". SO it's a little larger than the SD-10, but not much bigger than a Cell phone, so it's still rather convienient.

Now, if I could even actually remember to USE it, I'd be in business.
