I'm not impressed by people rambling on about how Christianity "stole" Christmas.
Hush now.
"Pagans" (as a unified, worldwide, catholic body of Everything Right and Good in the World Before Jeeezus Broke their Perfection) stole their stinkin' tree from the mole-worshippers of Guinea.

The Greek's heading to San Antonio for a week - she's on the plane now.
So expect More Surly.
Rawr!

Those bastard Guineans stole their mole symbols from the Hedgehog worshipers of New Zealand, where the High Holy Hedgehog constantly destroys the universe in combat with the colossal Kiwi of destruction, and recreates it in celestial make up sex.

Fkn heretics.

It was an Age undreamed of, a time before the oceans drank Atlantis, and the rise of the sons of arias.

This actually replaces the grumble I was going to have about how people needed to stop posting their opinions on "The War on Christmas" - because it all only exists in blogs of various stripes.

It's true, you know. I'm currently in NZ to celebrate the destruction of the universe.

Oh, and the make up sex.

And what everyone fails to realize is that the truth of the matter is quite simple, if anyone did any stealing, it was the grinch, plain and simple.

Why's the Greek in San Antonio? I'll be two hours south of that place in roughly a day's time...

Her aunt lives there. She has some family obligation to fulfill by being there for one holiday a year, and she chose Christmas. That beats New Year's, although she's missed of course.

Why are you going?
(If I missed an earlier explanation, my apologies!)

My parents live in Corpus Christi, two hours SE. It's where I grew up. My brother, sister, and I always go back for Christmas.

Here's to meeting you finally next year, no? :)

Really? I"m interested, do you have any links or something? I don't know much about a lot of this so I thought it was taken from pagan traditions.

From: [identity profile] scottopic.livejournal.com
Taken, yes, but it's old hat to know the symbology, timing, etc. is from older or different traditions, as if this invalidates squat. People love to say "stolen" because of particular axes to grind, and as if Xianity was the first or sole group to do so, or as if it was inherently wrong.

And please take any surliness as the general statement issued in the original post, not at the lovely and talented recalcitrant!

:-) I took it as a general statement and your opinion which has now sparked my curiosity to learn something new.

I'm going to start googling away and doing some further reading on this. (Once I wake up though, its my first day of holidays and have been up since 6am to drop a friend at the airport so I'm brain fried).

More interesting than the old-hat "they stole it from the pagans" (as if we modernites haven't borrowed anything from pre-modern societies and called it our own) is the conflict within Christian sects over how best, if at all to celebrate it. There's an article out there discussing how the Puritans banned Christmas upon penalty of 5pence for any act of celebration and how Baptists and Dutch Anglicans followed suit while Methodists, Catholics etc. practiced it. It seems there was a rift on whether or not to celebrate it, and how, right up until the 1860's or so. I'd link the article but you know...I saw it awhile ago...=)
